Training Requirements When Starting A Daycare?

It will take more than a love for children to start a good day care business. Being loving and patient are desirable requirements for daycare owners, but they are not always sufficient to satisfy state licensing boards. In order to start a daycare, you will need to undergo some training as proof that you are equipped for handling the responsibility of caring for a number of children of differing ages and all the conflicts and problems which might potentially arise.

When starting a daycare, you might be required to undergo a minimum amount of training as set forth by your state which most likely will include becoming certified in safety and first aid such as pediatric CPR. This training is very important and could actually save the life of one of the children which might be in your care. Becoming CPR certified will assist your daycare and be in compliance with state laws, which might make the environment safer for children, and give some peace of mind to parents. In order to become certified in CPR, you will therefore need to take classes and pass a practice as well as a written test. Classes are often offered through local hospitals, fire departments, and adult education centers. Certification is always good for two years upon which time you will need to go through the process again in order to become recertified. Any employees that you hire to work in your daycare will also need to become CPR certified.

In addition to CPR certification, your state might also require a certain amount of childhood education or child development training. An actual degree might or might not always be needed and will tend to vary by state. You might also like to take some business classes. Although they might not be required, starting a daycare and building a successful business out of it will require some basic business training so that you can set up your daycare properly and are in compliance with local ordinances and tax laws.

Once your initial training in child care and education completed, you should also expect to continue your training on an ongoing basis since continuing education credits will most likely be required in order to renew your license on a yearly basis. This will assist you in ensuring that your skills and knowledge are kept up to date so the children in your care are as safe and well cared for as possible.

When it comes to the specific kind and amount of training that will be required in order to start a daycare in your state, you will need to consult with your state and local licensing authorities. It is always important that your daycare is in compliance and properly licensed or it could be shut down and you could face some legal charges and fines. A good place to begin your search for local information is the official government website for your state, county, or city.
