Starting A Daycare In Your Own Home

If you love children and are seeking a home-based business, you will have probably considered starting a daycare in your home. It sounds simple enough, but you should know that it might be trickier than you might have initially expected. Daycares are tightly regulated for the safety and wellbeing of our children. Even though you plan to take care of the children in your own home, you might still need to go through some of the formal hoops and become licensed. It will all depend upon the regulations in your state and the number of children you will wish to care for as well as the amount of hours that you plan to care for them each day.

The first step when you start a daycare in your home is to try to determine how many children you will want to care for, then you should try to obtain a copy of the licensing regulations from your state and try to find out if you will need to then become licensed. If you need to obtain a license, you will then need to make sure that you adhere to the stipulations and licensing requirements and obtain your license before you accept any kids into your home.

Whether you need to become licensed or not, you will still need to consider the safety and well being of the children who are in your care. Try to prepare yourself for emergencies by taking a basic first aid class and becoming CPR certified. Through this way you will be prepared to deal with choking emergencies in case anyone of them should ever arise. It is not ever time consuming or expensive to get CPR certified and it will provide you and the child's parents with a little peace of mind that you will be able to handle some more life threatening situations.

You will also need to take some steps in order to child proof your home, particularly if you will be caring for some very small children. You can easily purchase some child proofing kits which come with outlet covers and latches. You should also try to invest in safety gates that will keep the children out of your main living area so that you don't have to be constantly on the alert for other family members who might be leaving out items with small parts.

You will also need some daycare supplies. Depending upon the ages of your children you will care for, you might need to buy some high chairs, child proof plates and utensils, or even some playground equipment. You can then save money by buying some of these items second hand, but try to make sure that the items you buy do meet the current safety standards and haven't been recalled. You will also need a good assortment of age appropriate toys in order to keep the children happy and occupied.

Your daycare supplies should also try to include a well stocked first aid kit with band aids, sun block, antibiotic ointment, and a thermometer. Be always aware that you should never administer any medications including children's Tylenol without a parent's prior consent.

When starting a daycare in your home, you will also need to consider how you will obtain your clients. There may be no problem if you would only like one or two children. If you intend to care for several kids then you might have to advertise in your local paper. Always remember that you are running a business, even if it is a small one. Try also to make sure that you do everything in a legal manner and have some policies put in place for late payments and disciplinary problems.

With a well researched and thought out business plan, you will be well on your way towards a rewarding career you can operate from the comfort of your own home. Starting a daycare in your home could be the perfect source of income for you, particularly if you have some young children of your own and would like to be at home with them everyday.
