Starting A Day Care - Choosing The Proper Location

Have you been considering starting a day care? If you have, maybe you have already decided to operate your business from your home. There are several advantages to doing so. There are also many benefits to operating your day care from its own location, especially if you plan to take care of many children. When selecting the best location for your day care, there are several things you should take into consideration first and this article will take a look at a few of them.

Firstly, you should try to make sure that any location you are considering is zoned for a day care. If it isn't, then there is no point in even considering the space. You also might want to ensure that the building you choose is in a safe location in your city and that it is not in need of any costly repairs. Your day care location will be the largest single expense for you so you will want to make a wise business decision when buying or renting the property. In addition, you will need to ensure the building meets licensing requirements such as the correct amount of space per child, and that it will meet all the fire and sanitation codes. If the building doesn't, then always be sure to calculate the cost of bringing the location up to code into your budget.

You might probably also like to consider if the location is convenient for parents and is located next to schools or large employment centers. Is there ample space for an outdoor play area? Being located on or close to a public transportation line is also a definite advantage.

When you have found a location that you prefer, it is probably a very good idea to bring in a licensing consultant to overlook the property and advise you if it is a good investment based upon your state licensing requirements. Try to make sure you will be able to afford the monthly payments and renovation costs as well as the utilities and insurance. If you are renting, you will want to make sure the lease spells out exactly what your responsibilities will be and what your landlord will be responsible for. You might want to have your attorney to go over the lease in order to make sure that you and your business are well protected before you decide to sign anything.

When starting your day care, selecting the location will be your biggest expense and one of the most important decisions that you will ever make. Therefore it is always important for you to make sure that the site is up to code or can be brought into compliance without a lot of expense. Additionally, you might want a location that is appealing to the children as well as their parents.
