Starting A Day Care - Picking The Right Location

Are you thinking of starting a day care? If so, perhaps you have already decided to operate your business from your home. There are many advantages to doing so. There are also many advantages to operating your day care from its own location, especially if you plan to take care of several children. When selecting the best location for your day care, there are several things you should take into consideration and this article will take a look at a few of them.

First of all, you should make sure that any location you are considering is zoned for a day care. If it isn't, there is no point in even considering the space. You also want to ensure that the building you choose is in a safe location in your city and that it is not in need of any expensive repairs. Your day care location will be the largest single expense for you so you will want to make a wise business decision when buying or renting the property. Additionally, you will need to ensure the building meets licensing requirements such as the correct amount of space per child, and that it meets fire and sanitation codes. If the building does not, be sure to calculate the cost of bringing the location up to code into your budget.

You will probably also want to consider if the location is convenient for parents and is located next to schools or large employment centers. Is there ample space for an outdoor play area? Being located on or close to a public transportation line is a plus also.

When you have found a location that you like, it is probably a good idea to bring in a licensing consultant to look over the property and advise you if it is a good investment based upon your state licensing requirements. Make sure you will be able to afford the monthly payments and renovation costs as well as the utilities and insurance. If you are renting, you want to make sure the lease spells out exactly what your responsibilities will be and what your landlord will be responsible for. You may want to have your attorney to go over the lease to make sure you and your business is well protected before you sign anything.

When starting your day care, selecting the location is your biggest expense and one of the most important decisions you will make. Therefore it is important to make sure the site is up to code or can be brought into compliance without a lot of expense. In addition, you want a location that is appealing to the children and their parents.
